Travel Mexico - Isla MujeresThis island is called "the backpackers Cancun" for a reason - it's where you come to relax! The best beach on the island is in town making it easy to get to, the people are great, and you can walk everywhere - or for those of you who prefer wheels, you can rent a scooter or golf cart for M$250-300 for a few hours. While you're there be sure to visit Velazquez' for a delicious bite to eat. Of the four nights I was there I ate there three of them. For M$120 we got two fish, and pile of crab, rice, beans, salad, french fries, chips, salsa, guacamole, beer, and two free shots at the end. Chips, salsa, and guacamole come free with meals, as well as the free shot at the end. To get there: turn left as you exit the ferry dock, walk two blocks until you see 'Velazquez' on your left. It is beach front, the food is delicious, and the prices can't be beat. Scroll down for a map. Isla Mujeres is located close to one of many coral reefs, and the area is popular for its snorkeling and scuba diving. Isla Mujeres is also home to a population of sea turtles. Because of the recent endangerment of sea turtles in the area, a facility was set up on the southern end of the island for the rehabilitation and breeding of them. This facility is open to the public.
Its relative proximity to Cuba has made it one of the favorite stepping stones of Cubans trying to reach the United States in recent years.
