Travel Mexico - Palenque

Palenque is a Maya archeological site near the Usumacinta River in the Mexican state of Chiapas, located about 130 km south of Ciudad del Carmen. It is a medium-sized site, much smaller than such huge sites as Tikal or Copán, but it contains some of the finest architecture, sculpture, roof comb and bas-relief carvings the Maya produced.

If people are limited in time when visiting Mexico or are unsure as to which ruin sites to visit, this should be first on their list. Although the other sites are also interesting, Palenque is favored due to its surrounding jungle and the lack of bikini clad, high healed tourists.

You can stay in town or outside of town, although it is much nicer outside of the main town.

Where to Stay:

In town:
Hotel Regional; M$230 nice with a turtle pond
Posada Shalom II; M$300

Outside Town: ***Much nicer here

l Jaguar; shared/private bathroom M$120/200
